Bridges, 2020, acrylic on canvas, 18 x 18 inches, unframed
What is a bridge? It could be a way to escape from the enemy territory. It could be a station where one ventures into the last meditative state of this lifetime before moving courageously to the next. It is a place where many couples take wedding pictures, and toddlers may practice their first step. It is a connection between two worlds, two realms. The bridge has to be sturdy enough to support at least the weight of the person crossing it. It requires strict engineering and architectural design. The bridge prepares us for change while carrying our footprints over clear or muddy waters, small terrain gaps, or the abyss.
I used soft, pastel colors for this work. The pink bridges in the right lower corner do not have a clear beginning or end; they float, creating tension by contrast with serene, light-colored surroundings. That may suggest the notion of Life itself, as a suspended bridge, a short suspended passage between two beginnings of whose details we are bewildered.
